They should index it to inflation. Otherwise it is an underhanded way to start taxing most people in the future.

Agreed. Not indexing it seems a pretty deliberate move towards the same strategy as our tax brackets - capture more money each year due to inflation and occasionally make your government look good by raising the cutoff (by less than inflation).

…and the media are covering it as if the Sky was falling? Yeah, sounds about right. Typical right-wing populist spiel, they are all for talking about improving things for the masses - but will rail against any baby steps made in the right direction.
