☠️ Memento Mori. Forgotten in the forest, Langton Old Parish Church graveyard sits near Gavinton in the Scottish Borders. The historic village of Langton once stood around the churchyard walls. As the nearby estate expanded in the mid-1700s, Langton was demolished to make way. They were relocated to the nearby planned village of Gavinton. Now the old churchyard is all that remains, lost in the forest. The site holds a fascinating collection of headstones, as well as a sizable crypt. The headstones feature the classic Memento Mori from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. My favourites were the Cherub and the Green Man. The cherub represents the immortal soul. The grotesque mask of the Green Man represents earthly flesh, physical mortality, and the decay of the grave. Placing the heavenly winged cherub directly above the symbolises the triumph of the immortal soul over death and the sins of the flesh #ScottishBorders #Scotland #Graveyard #Cemetery #MementoMori
