Memories of this quote sprang out of discussion of a certain painting. A painting of the trial and execution of “Lollard” Christian heretics in 1401 AD. It seems Lollardy was a “proto-Protestant Christian religious movement that was active in England from the mid-14th century until the 16th-century English Reformation.” –WP
