otherWise Indigenous Circle: Language, Land, and Indigenous Sovereignty with Panigkaq Agatha John-Shields
How does language shape our worldviews and what we believe is possible for ourselves and each other? How does language connect Indigenous people to their lands, lifeways, medicine, and sovereignty?
Renowned Alaskan Native (Yup'ik) educator, culture, and language bearer Dr. Panigkaq Agatha John-Shields has spent the majority of her educational journey advocating for Yup'ik cultural values of Kenkakun (Love) in education, including the central role of language and culture in sustaining these values. Through storytelling about her life growing up in Nunakauyaq/Toksook Bay in a family of ten children led by traditional chief Kangrilnguq Paul John and his wife Anguyaluk Martina, she will discuss Yup'ik worldviews, knowledges, spirituality, and sovereignty as they emerge and are shaped by Yugtun, the Yup'ik language and culture.
