For this Friday Movie Night, first up is A Summer’s Tale (1996), a French rom-com from renowned auteur Eric Rohmer, the guy behind My Night at Maud’s (1969) and Love in the Afternoon (1972), both of which we previously watched. A French grad student goes on vacation to the Riviera and waits for his lady-friend for some planned romance; uh-oh, he meets a new lady in the meantime, who introduces him to a third lady, and uh-oh, suddenly, he’s schmoozing all three of them at once, and each has different attitudes toward his inclination for casual flings. Yes, this is pretty much the most French plot ever. Nonetheless, it has an extremely high score on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.
Next up is Wildwood (2026), the new stop-motion fantasy sensation from Laika, the studio behind such other animated hits as Coraline (2009), Paranorman (2012), and Kubo & the Two Strings (2016), all of which we have previously watched. A young girl and her classmate find themselves within a sinister forest filled with menacing creatures as they race against time to rescue the girl’s baby brother from a flock of evil crows. Director Travis Knight also helmed the aforementioned Kubo & the Two Strings, as well as Masters of the Universe (2026), which we watched earlier this year. At a bit over two hours, this is the longest stop-motion feature ever made, and is Laika’s first PG-13 film; it has received rave reviews, and is currently ranked #46 on the Letterboxd Top 500. A decent-quality camrip has just appeared, so that is what we will watch.
