For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Code Geass (2006), a sci-fi anime, marking a collaboration between Gundam studio Sunrise and noodle-people factory CLAMP. It follows the adventures of noodle-man Lelouch, a student of the Holy Empire of Britannia in the near future of 2010, as the regime prepares for its final conquest of Japan. A mysterious green-haired girl suddenly appears and grants him superpowers, which he decides to use to rebel against his country, seeking revenge for past grievances. Director Goro Taniguchi also helmed Planetes (2003), as well as a bunch of Gundam stuff, while writer Ichiro Okouchi also wrote AAzumanga Daioh (2002) and Mahou Sensei Negima (2005). In addition, the artists of CLAMP also created Cardcaptor Sakura (1994) and Magic Knight Rayearth (1994), both of which we previously watched. This is often considered one of the best anime of all time, so let’s give it a whirl. Episodes 38 through 43 tonight, continuing the second season.

After that is Ultraman: Rising (2024), an English-language animated feature-film adaptation of the classic tokusatsu franchise about a superpowered guy who grows really big and fights equally big monsters. A high-school student returns to Japan from America to take up the Ultraman mantle from his estranged scientist father, but uh-oh, his superheroics are interrupted by his need to care for a 35-foot-tall baby kaiju. A deep-state military faction seeks to exterminate all kaiju from Earth, and so, Ultraman must go into action once again, but to protect a monster, rather than kill it. What a twist. This is the sole feature-film credit of director Shannon Twiddle; the film is a collaboration between Ultraman studio Tsuburaya and Netflix. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.
