I knew that I was going to have a couple of days right at the beginning of the event when I wouldn’t be able to make as much progress. But, I wanted to be certain that I didn’t fall behind. So, I’ve managed to stay ahead of the curve by ~820 words.
That might seem like a lot. But tomorrow I’m going to have even less time to write than I did today, so the more I can stay ahead the better.
Now for the remainder of tonight I need to focus on developing characters, settings, etc. I have all the sheets set up. (One of the reasons I included the Word-Smith Organizer in the screenshot today was so you can see the links to all the of the character and setting sheets. One of the great features of working in Obsidian.)
I have been doing some thinking about how this story works a bit more. Understanding what I am trying to achieve it’s obvious that I really needed to do some research before I started writing. While the location(s) in which it takes place are fictional, there are many elements that aren’t fictional. It’s those non-fictional elements that I need to do research on as they will play an important role.
The characters are, of course, also important. I have the main reason(s) for their importance down. It’s built into the premise of the story. But that’s only a small part of the story. Their histories, personalities, and a number of other things are going to really define how they work within the story. That was yet another thing that I didn’t really have the time to consider before starting the writing.
There is one decision that I am glad that I made before I started writing: I cut down the number of major characters. Originally I was going to have 5-7 major characters. Cutting that down will make for a better story.
Anyway, I could prattle on a lot more about the meta of designing a novel. But I think I will leave it for future updates.
(Note: I post these updates on my blog Unattributed.)
So, how is everyone doing?
