Yavuz Çetin – For Sale (Satılık) (2001, Turkey)
This spotlight was supposed to be published about 2 months ago with the opener “to swing the pendulum back – because, let’s be honest, we do need guitars anyway”,[1] but then life happened and so now that doesn’t make much sense. That said, our need for guitars is rather evergreen, and so our next spotlight is on number 1012 on The List, submitted by KateOfMind.
And this album features not just any ol’ guitar we could find – here we have one of Turkey’s best on the instrument, and one of the most revered Anatolian blues rock singers.
Having already mastered both the acoustic and electric guitar while in high school, Yavuz Çetin was a member of Turkey’s legendary Blue Blues Band, considered to be one of the country’s best live rock bands.
Satılık (“For Sale“) was Çetin’s second and last solo studio album, completed just before his tragic death at the age of 30 and released posthumously a few months later. I unfortunately can’t find too much on him in English (and especially not on sites that aren’t 95% pop-up ads), but, geez, it’s easy to hear why this artist was legendary. I mean, just listen to that picking on “Oyuncak Dünya”, a track that has some great acoustic Alice in Chains vibes. And the tone on “Köle” would’ve been at home on a Prince album, don’t you think?
There are quite a few videos of Çetin performing, especially with the Blue Blues Band (e.g., here), so there’s some more great stuff to dig into for those curious. I believe him and another band mate (Kerim Çaplı) are also the focus of the documentary Blue (2017).
