For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is The Bad Seed (1956), a horror/thriller that asks, “What if little girls were evil?” A respectable middle-class 1950s mother gradually discovers that her seemingly-angelic eight-year-old daughter is a diabolical serial killer who delights in the suffering and misery of others. Mom can hardly believe it herself; how will she ever convince the rest of the world that her daughter is evil? I guess we’ll see. Director Mervyn LeRoy also helmed Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933) and Little Caesar (1931), both of which we previously watched on the ‘tube.

BONUS: Between the features, we will The Curse of Mr. Bean (1990), the third episode of the legendary British slapstick series Mr. Bean (1990-95). In this one Bean struggles to dive from a diving board, tries to evade a parking fee, and, most relevantly to Halloween, takes his girlfriend to a scary movie. Hilarity ensues as his lack of social skills interferes with even the simplest tasks.

Next is Beauty and the Beast (1978) Czech Gothic horror based on the French fairy tale of the same name A bankrupt merchant wanders into some spooky woods, discovers a castle there, and takes refuge, only to fall into the clutches of the hideous beast in residence. The merchant’s daughter agrees to take her father’s place to save his life, and she must then live in the castle. Turns out the beast is a transformed prince who needs to fall in love to regain his human form. Spookiness and suspense ensue from there. Director Juraj Herz is otherwise best-known for the Holocaust satire The Cremator (1969), which we previously watched.
