3 years ago (in 2023) I set-up my fediverse server that ran Calckey software. I wanted to migrate my primary fediverse account (po3mah@mastodon.social), but was always hesitant.
Then Calckey-Firefish drama happened, Calckey development was stuck and wasn’t developed anymore, I never managed to migrate to new Firefish software … so my server always remained as a testing server. Then Firefish ‘died’ too.
Without proper updates and upgrade path I decided to shut it down, I never really fully used it. While it’s UI is really nice (in comparison with Mastodon’s), it doesn’t work with Android client (Tusky).
Calckey has a lot of functions which I never explored fully. I especially liked the animated ball of federation servers:
My single user instance was running in a small LXC on Proxmox, hovering around 30GB of disk space and 600MB of memory. I think it had some sort of memory related leak, because Calckey process ate all available memory in a day. I set-up a restart at midnight and that was all maintenance I had to do in all 3 years.
What’s next?
I set up this new LittleFedi thing on separate subdomain. I tried to migrate my #Calckey account to LittleFedi’s. I managed to create an alias and migrate people I follow (on LittleFedi’s side – target account https://li.rozman.info/@po3mah). When I tried to initiate transfer of followers on Calckey, it said it can’t migrate the admin account. Allright then.
So that was it, I exported all my posts and people, shut down LXC container.
I wonder what will happen to my Calckey’s fediverse handle. As I read, I can’t reuse it because of cryptographic keys.
I’m really looking forward to new development of #littleFedi server. Setup is fairly easy, it’s light and quick and it runs without issues almost for 3 weeks, since 1. Oct. 2026.
What I really miss in the #fediverse is a proper migration of identities, posts and followers. The current state is … suboptimal, mildly said.
