“They’re completely out of touch… F**k [Macron’s] policies and the riot police too.” Protesters in Paris accused police of using excessive force to suppress mass outrage over rising living costs, fuel prices, and crumbling public services, after Saturday’s national day of action brought more than half a million people into the streets across France, including 110,000 in the capital. Organizers say the government’s focus on property damage distracts from the economic crisis fueling the rebellion. They accused French authorities of pouring money into a militarized police response to the movement instead of caring for the country’s most vulnerable populations. Students, trade unionists, and organizers from the Yellow Vest movement joined protests over the weekend, which saw riot police deploy tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators in Paris and other cities on Saturday. Macron has blamed “far-left extremist groups” and “criminals” for the unrest. Lille and three other northern towns have imposed curfews.
