For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Code Geass (2006), a sci-fi anime, marking a collaboration between Gundam studio Sunrise and noodle-people factory CLAMP. It follows the adventures of noodle-man Lelouch, a student of the Holy Empire of Britannia in the near future of 2010, as the regime prepares for its final conquest of Japan. A mysterious green-haired girl suddenly appears and grants him superpowers, which he decides to use to rebel against his country, seeking revenge for past grievances. Director Goro Taniguchi also helmed Planetes (2003), as well as a bunch of Gundam stuff, while writer Ichiro Okouchi also wrote AAzumanga Daioh (2002) and Mahou Sensei Negima (2005). In addition, the artists of CLAMP also created Cardcaptor Sakura (1994) and Magic Knight Rayearth (1994), both of which we previously watched. This is often considered one of the best anime of all time, so let’s give it a whirl. Episodes 19 through 25 tonight, finishing off the first season.

After that is The Treasure of Swamp Castle (1985), AKA Szaffi, a Hungarian animated feature based Mor Jokai’s 1885 novel The G*psy Baron, and incorporating music from the 1885 operetta adaptation by Johan Strauss II. In 18th-century Hungary, an impoverished young aristocrat returns to his family’s old estate, hoping to reclaim a treasure chest that his family hid during wartime. Unfortunately for him, the property is now a ruin in a swamp, which is also the home of a Roma girl and her cat; together, they outwit the various villains who seek the treasure for themselves. Director Attila Dargay also did the cartoon fox saga Vuk (1981), which we previously watched. Nice reviews for this, so let’s check it out.
