  The “g” isn’t silent. the “gn” in Italian (and French) is pronounced like a “n” with a tilde (~, e.g “ñ”) in Spanish.

  • bologna = bo lo nya
  • gnocchi = nyo ki
  • cognac = co nyak
  • jalapeño = ha la pe nyo
