The “g” isn’t silent. the “gn” in Italian (and French) is pronounced like a “n” with a tilde (~, e.g “ñ”) in Spanish.
- bologna = bo lo nya
- gnocchi = nyo ki
- cognac = co nyak
- jalapeño = ha la pe nyo
