I don't know, I think it's a two-way street. Writers can write whatever they want however they want, but once they achieve an audience and that audience is supporting them, of course there is some reasonable expectation that you would continue with the thing. It isn't even about the money -- I was never paid a penny for developing fbxl magazine, but I had a few very vocal fans who were excited to read it when I did put it out, and their desire isn't commodification, it's the desire to have more of something that they have decided that they enjoy.
Especially when we are talking about an unfinished story, it isn't commodification in the fact that our minds are literally wired to want to see the ending of a story. Therefore, it's human nature.
