You might already know this, but make sure to go between Hot, Active, Scaled and Top 6 Hours to get more of a variety for the general stuff. Active is usually the default and it makes everything seem dead. We’re definitely still quiet with the niche subjects though.

Two weeks ago Reddit started forcing me to login in order to access the old version of the site. For me, that was the final push I needed to jump ship. I had created an account here a few years back but never quite got invested in the platform as Reddit was still decently usable with a few tweaks.
I am a bit nervous as subreddits that I frequented don’t have established alternatives here. I could usually jump on Reddit once or twice a day and have a decent bit of posts to look through for a given subreddit. I haven’t seen that level of activity on some of the communities I’m interested in that I’ve looked at across lemmy. It’s probably just the reality of joining a newer and growing community.
Regardless, I’m excited to be here and I appreciate the look behind the scenes.

if you build it they will come. one thing i’ve found very useful are when folks link to interesting discussions from comments - it makes me appreciate instances, communities, and individuals and look horizontally (the solar punk instance was lovely to discover.) the fediverse feels so appropriate at both a local and global level, having known about lemme for so long i feel a little remiss for not participating more, earlier. long story short just create what you want to see, and give it some occasional attention to nurture its growth

Yeah, that’s the one thing that’s missing for me. On Reddit I was on the Arsenal subreddit where after a game there would be thousands of comments. Here, there are maybe 5.
Lemmy is doing great when it comes to general news, politics, memes, programming stuff, etc. But, it will be a while before the more niche communities are healthy.
OTOH, Reddit is changing too – not just that it’s becoming more corporate. But also, more and more posts on /r/all are about India and India-related things. People in general seem to be dumber – angry about dumb stuff, more spelling mistakes, just little things I’ve noticed.
Anyhow, I really appreciate sh.itjust.works and The Dude, and especially the openness of how things are going.
