I used Jabber a long time ago with other students on very specific projects at school, but it’s mostly dead now I guess.

Jabber wasn’t meant for large groups or real-time communications. Anything is better nowadays.
Regarding your guidance about my homework, l shall be making a live USB stick of MX Linux, and working with it. Enough of windows and WSL.
