I’m not sure what to think about this. I really liked the first few episodes because they gave me the impression that the story would have something more behind it. But later it felt like there was more and more style over substance as the series went on. Overall, I think I will remember this show mostly for the direction. No matter what you think about the plot, Souta Ueno has genuine talent, and I’d like to see him in charge of a more ambitious project.

I agree.
I suspect there’s a fair amount of fault to find with this (I haven’t entirely digested it yet, so I’m unsure how much of the apparent missing context is genuinely missing or just things I didn’t pick up on), but I suspect that most of it can be traced back to the screenplay. The direction was impressive, and I too would like to see what he can do with a different project.
