The certificate of entitlement is only really for countries which don’t officially acknowledge dual citizenship, kind of a way to hide your British passport from them. I know the advice for a dual British/Chinese citizen is to get this certificate in your British passport. The chinese would see the certificate in it and count it as a visa and let you depart.

OK makes sense. But for this example it would apply to British dual nationals wanting to return to the UK? Surely have your foreign passport for regular use in whatever country you live in and when you want to return to the UK show your British passport? This saving you the admin and paperwork and money.

I assume for most dual nationals, they’ll have two passports.
