llama@lemmy.zip 1 week agoThey’re obsessed with this idea that people they perceive to be lower on the social hierarchy than them can somehow always have a use for their old stuff. As if using their old stuff is part of the process to become successful like them.

stuff used to be more expensive relative to wages, especially electronics. our parent’s generation were from a time where a TV cost 3 months rent. now a month of rent is 3 TVs. this also accounts for “you’re poor but you have an iPhone” discourse
