Comment on “You Should Be Honoured to Work Here”: British Library Staff are Striking for Pay, Conditions, and Respect

A lot of public sector work is only accomplished through a combination of goodwill and guilt.

Yes, some public sector workers are work-shy wastes of space (although claiming they dont also exist in the private sector is a nonsense).

But for every waste of space there are a couple of dozen people beavering away on shitty pay trying to do the best they can for their fellow citizens.

I work in the public sector in a fairly senior role. I’m on 52k which is a lot of money, for which I’m grateful.

But, when you stack that up against the sheer amount of work I need to do, the fact there needs to be three of me at least and I’d be getting at least 75k to 80k in the private sector doing the exact same job it is easy to see why a lot of people are pissed off.

I do the job for the organisation I do it for because I genuinely feel like I can make a difference and that I’m contributing to the public good and welfare of vulnerable people.

But fuck me, I’m absolutely fucking knackered, stressed out and on the verge of losing my shit. Fortunately today was a chilled out day so I’ve reset a little.
