It is an approximation of intelligence. Literally a universal approximator trained on “intelligent” data. I can think of many applications where such a tool would be a brilliant fit but I swear tech companies are hell bent on cramming it into every single niche that it doesn’t belong.

Even worse, it isn’t even a solid term. It’s a marketing term.
“Why is the new model so much more expensive?”
“It has AI now.”
“What does that mean? I see you changed the touchscreen on the washing machine to have a symbol for AI but you never explain what that does.”
“It senses things and intelligently adjusts for the load.”
“So it’s a sensor and a script of conditions to follow based on the reading. That’s not intelligence. That’s exactly what it did before. You just added a $300 upcharge, the requirement for an internet connection and a light for it.”
“Yes, because it has AI.”
