i think because mercury was super stable in a cavity filling, and doesnt deform easily. most new fillings use the resin method now.

Wild that its even a choice.
Here we have a state of the art UV cured resin thats twice as strong as enamel, which will bind to your tooth chemically and may last the rest of your life.
Ooooor, we can just smash some heavy metal into your tooth and hope it stays there.

Amalgam fillings can last 20 years or more. Resin fillings don’t last much more than 10. Each time it’s replaced, more and more of your tooth must be removed.
