Have you tried talking to your own parents/older family members? They've seen most of the common problems and can give you reasonable answers.

My own parents didn’t take my son to the emergency room when he had an asthma attack and was literally turning blue because they’d been taught asthma isn’t ‘that bad’ and people who have it are hypochondriacs.

That's why I put my suggestion in the form of a question. Not every adult is a grown up.
The situation reminds me of an old gag. The first kid's first nose bleed means a trip to the ER. The third kid's second nose bleed is met with "Get off the good rug!"
