As far as I know, other languages (Japanese, Arabic etc) get along without capital letters…

Greco-Roman thing, kept because it is in fact useful and has a point. For example, designating proper nouns. Or Demonstrating Emphasis For Silly People And Facebook Olds. OR TO CONVEY VOLUME OF “SPEECH.”
