Comment on Can't login to bubbles.town with sh.itjust.works instance?

Haven’t heard of bubbles.town before, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
I notice that Lemmy is not explicitly listed as one of the login options. I tried the sh.itjust.works, lemmy.world, and lemmy.world, and got the same error as you did. I also tried a couple Mastodon instances (spacey.space and mastodon.social) and it seemed to recognize those as valid options.
Is there some way to confirm with the devs of bubbles.town that Lemmy is included in “other Fediverse-compatible servers”?
I know @grant@toast.ooo has used Lemmy as an authentication method for the Fediverse Canvas events, so in theory it should be possible, but the devs might not have implemented it.

Lemmy has some gotchas with handling federated direct messages, which is probably the snag happening here
Lemmy v0.19 and earlier (which includes the vast majority of Lemmy instances) only accept ChatMessage object types, which aren’t supported on most implementations
They have an “in progress” implementation of the “Note” object type for direct messages (which almost every other implementation uses), but it hasn’t landed yet from the looks of it

Hi @grant@toast.ooo and @threelonemusk and thanks for answering. I’m not familiar with the workings of authentication and how it relates to the different types of instances. I kinda thought that all fediverse instances had somehow settled/agreed on a compatible standard but it seems my understanding is too shallow 😑.
I just saw from their FAQ that they only support a specific type of instance:
Anything with Mastodon-compatible OAuth: Mastodon, Pixelfed, GoToSocial, Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Sharkey, Hometown.
Bluesky, Lemmy, and Threads are not supported.
