It’s a phone book. It can contain phone numbers to other phone books.
Since phone books have been an out of date technology for like 20+ years: you want to know where something is, so you ask the guy who knows where stuff is. If he doesn’t know where it is, he consults his own guys that know where stuff is. When one of them finds out they tell you. That’s DNS.
Edit: There’s also a few guys that know where things are and they shout really loud about how they know stuff, so the guy who knows where stuff is believes these other guys. Occasionally one of those guys that’s shouting really loud is actually just a drunk guy and he lies. That’s how you take down the internet.
