pixelle@midwest.social 9 months agoThis is exactly it. What these people actually mean when they say “there’s no one to follow” is that “there’s no clout to be chased.” People are brainwashed to use social media for clout chasing influencers rather than actual meaningful interaction.

To be fair, "a chance at fame and attention" is the sales pitch from the commercial platforms. They don't want users having "meaningful conversation". There's a great essay/rant from Cat Valente called "Stop Talking to Each Other and Start Buying Things".
