Trump ending up as President in 2016 was largely an accident. You can see the complete 180 by media orgs and the top brass of the GOP once he got the nomination as evidence of that. They had all geared up for a Jeb Bush nomination, and that obviously never materialized. 2024 was a bit more intentional, because he wanted to run again and nobody in the party really dared stand in his way.
That said, Trump is very much an outsider and got elected mostly on that basis. He’s a result of a decade or two of frustrations w/ the establishment, and now we’re seeing what that actually looks like. His approval rating took a serious hit during the tariff nonsense, and it’s only back now that he’s not doing what he promised to do. I don’t think Americans really want what he has to offer, they just want something different from what they got before.
