Comment on OCTOPATH TRAVELER and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II are coming to GOG in the Preservation Program
tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 4 hours agoDid you finish the first one? I played through all the characters through either chapter 1 or 2 (can’t remember now) and it immediately turned into a grindfest where I couldn’t progress because everything was suddenly killing me.
Did I miss something or was it specifically designed to be a “grind to progress” type of game?

Nope. That’s pretty much all I remember and my same experience.

OK good, I don’t have to feel too bad about dropping it then. The story was ok enough (ish) and they made enough changes to the combat system to make it feel innovative at first, but I’m not sure who they thought was clamoring for a 90s style padded grind experience in 2018. I guess it got favorable reviews and sold well enough so maybe I’m the crazy one but I thought the time of farming random encounters to triple the length of your game was a thing of the past.

The innovation they used to address that was mostly the unique interactions each (half) the characters had. The steal/barter, inspect, duel, etc. That got access to a lot of things that either shortened grinds or made grinding easier.
But for me it just wasn’t worth the grind anyway when the characters didn’t really interact.
