It was a recent addition a few weeks/months ago. LW does not support them for instance.

glowing_hans@sopuli.xyz 4 weeks agoI noticed Alt-Text is far less popular on lemmy than on mastodon.social, not a fan, but maybe it has to do something with the User-Interface, and how obvious alt-text is made.
