I think 5x5 is a great way to start, gets you familiar with the compound lifts quickly and takes advantage of those amazing newb gains. And if you dig it after a few months you can switch over to a periodized program easily.

I’ve been doing a few cycles of tactical barbell and it has cardio/HIT built-in. I was tired of being embarrassed on hikes last summer with zero cardio, would definitely recommend!
