How come these avifs (from piefed.social) never embed properly on my lemmy.world home page, so I can’t click the thumbnail to expand them? I always have to click through to view the image.

You’re not wrong, but admittedly I don’t know what else to do as the comment didn’t get a reply from OP.
In theory, they may notice that their .avif posts don’t do as well and switch to .png or .jpg or whatever Lemmy treats as something that can be thumbnailed even if they don’t know why their .avif posts do poorly.
