So #meshcore and #meshtastic stuff...
As I understand it, I could have a device near me connected to my phone, and my kid could have a device near them. Then we could communicate through the app if there are nodes connecting us?

@tootbrute yes, if both are on the same network (meshcore or Meshtastic).
You could send them public messages if you don't share keys, or private messages if you can share keys with them.
@tootbrute It feels kinda "lame" (as in, it feels like it defeats the whole point of being off-grid), but you can also set up an MQTT fallback in Meshtastic, and if there are no nodes connecting you, the message gets sent to the MQTT server you configured on both devices (using your phone's network connection).
@tootbrute@fedi.arkadi.one basically, yup. the idea is that if there are enough people in your area with the radios powered on, a message can reach a fair distance. I hear stuff for about 8 miles around, plus people on planes flying overhead using them too.
To make it safe for kids, you'll need to get a little more involved to perhaps take them off the main public channel and set up your own channel with a shared key between all you're family's devices so you have a private place to talk and dont have your kids exposed to an open radio frequency unattended.
