One thing I have always appreciated and respected some government agencies for has been their willingness to open source their code, documentation, or even just their experiences.

I understand internal deadlines and working with third parties is not easy, but simply making what you already have available is a big win for the industry as a whole, as well as with attracting new hires. I have learned so much from OSS by just looking at code, and it feels like a giant missed opportunity for agencies who don't practice this.

Opening up code is something I really wish $dayjob would start doing as well, but I've been having trouble phrasing my argument. Especially sucks when I've grown up with OSS, contributing and collaborating for as long as I've been programming, while people around me have not and do not see the value in this.

It may sound childish, but I do enjoy reading and learning from this stuff. Code, docs, blogs, rants, presentation, I gobble it all up
