What an extra 10000 rupees buys in a laptop in India

Why the step from fifty thousand to sixty thousand rupees matters most

Choosing between a laptop at fifty thousand and one at sixty is the most worthwhile stretch in the Indian market. It is where 16GB of RAM stops being an upgrade and becomes the norm, where six- and eight-core processors replace quad-cores, and where backlit keyboards, better panels and bigger batteries turn up as standard rather than as a special edition.

What sixty thousand should get you

  • 16GB of RAM, dual-channel where possible. Check whether it is soldered before assuming you can add more later.
  • A six- or eight-core processor. Intel Core i5 13th-gen U or H series, or AMD Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7. For coding, H-series chips and the eight-core Ryzen 7 are what keep builds and virtual machines usable.
  • A screen worth looking at. 250 nits is the floor; 300 nits with an anti-glare finish makes a real difference in a classroom or on a train.
  • A battery above 50Wh, and a USB-C port that charges the laptop so you carry one charger.

Where this band still lets you down

No discrete graphics worth gaming on, in almost every case. And 8GB soldered single-channel is the configuration to skip on the cheapest listings.

Intel or AMD

Intel 13th-gen Core i5 gives better single-thread performance and usually a better integrated GPU. AMD Ryzen 7 gives more multi-core work per rupee and tends to last longer on battery. Pick by whether your work is bursty or long-running.
