Congressional Republicans thought they had planned this perfectly. They rammed through the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” with strict party line voting. This meant huge tax cuts for the rich. However, they also included punitive measures so that the damage caused by huge cuts to Medicaid will not come into affect until after the 2026 midterms. This means they can get away with it.
However, it is turning out to be a disaster for them.
This bill is incredibly bad for the country. It causes increases to health insurance costs overall. It also puts the safety net at risk. Families are unable to afford necessary prescriptions due to the instability in the market. Most worryingly, those in rural areas are the ones who suffer the most. Ironically this is the core group of Republican voters. Rural areas will suffer as clinics and hospitals shut down.
Some Republicans could see the danger ahead. Outgoing North Carolina GOP Senator Thom Tillis warned that this would cause a backlash similar to the one we saw in 2010 when the Obamacare bill was passed. However, they were ignored in congress and blindly followed their leaders.
The human cost is huge. People across America are sharing their stories about how their children can no longer access cancer treatment. In Kansas, Children’s Mercy Hospital has stated they will become out of network on January 1st for families accessing the ACA marketplace. Parents are horrified they will be hit hard by the GOP cuts.
When it comes to November 2026, people will not forget who voted to increase their costs.
