Ever wondered what a night out in the underground techno scene of France sounds like? Well, wonder no more. ‘Upgrade’, the latest track from the duo Cut Face, gives you the fast-pass to the cut line, cut the B.S., and delve into the body of the beast.
The track is DIY through and through, but intentionally so. This sound isn’t due to a lack of equipment, skills, or talent – it’s a conscious choice made to keep it as close to reality as possible. The echoes of Tacita Grace’s voice evoke fuzzy images of swimming with the current at a warehouse party, happy to go wherever aligns best with the crowd, while your own decision-making skills are subpar at best.
In her own words, Grace says
‘Upgrade’ is a pure plunge into drugs and partying to forget, accepting numbness as the escape.
That numbness comes with a side of punchy kicks that thrust you into the dysphoric atmosphere that French electronic music is known for. The other half of Cut Face, producer Body Hook explains,
It’s a brutal yet atmospheric vision, still underpinned by music that really hits you in the body.
That vision is underpinned by the lyrics themselves, which depict a bender of a weekend, one that leaves the listener either feeling queasy about past mistakes or longing for a night out.
