Another true story of one name, in full, so you can judge the work.

You know her face. The Shiba Inu in the Doge meme, the one that became a coin. Her name is Kabosu, and almost nobody who has seen her knows that.

She started at a shelter. A puppy mill in Japan shut down and the dogs were sent away. A volunteer there named her Kabosu, after the kabosu, a sour citrus that grows in Oita. In 2008 a kindergarten teacher, Atsuko Sato, adopted her and kept the name, because the dog's face was round like the fruit.

In 2010 Sato photographed her on a yellow couch. By 2013 that face was everywhere. Then it became a cryptocurrency. Millions met the dog. Almost none met the name.

Kabosu died in May 2024, eighteen years old, in Sakura, Chiba.

The face went around the world. The name stayed a fruit. And the person who chose it, a volunteer at a shelter whose own name we never learn, is now attached to one of the most reproduced images on earth.

Some names outlive the one who gave them. Some outlive us all. This one did.

If you carry a name you are curious about, tell me. I find where it truly comes from, in real sources, and write it back as a letter.
