Guest Tip by Dr. Mike Keyes, MD

Once you master physical relaxation, you can deploy mental programming techniques to radically alter your performance baseline. These techniques operate on the principle that your subconscious mind controls complex physical mechanics and cannot differentiate between a vividly imagined event and reality.

1. Strategic Visualization (Altering Your Self-Image)

Your performance is strictly bound by your internal self-image; you are compelled to act in alignment with who you believe you are. To break through scoring plateaus, you must systematically upgrade that self-image.

How to Build Affirmation Cards

Write your objective on a 3x5 index card. The phrasing must strictly adhere to three rules: 1. Positive: Focus entirely on what you are achieving, never what you want to avoid. 2. Present Tense: Write it as an active, current reality (e.g., “I am...”), not a future hope (“I want to be...”). 3. First Person: Use personal ownership statements.

💡 Example Statement: “I am a 570 air pistol shooter.”

The Practice Protocol

  • Step 1: Induce a deeply relaxed physical state using your breathing or progressive relaxation cues.
  • Step 2: Read your affirmation card once out loud, and once silently to yourself.
  • Step 3: Close your eyes and visualize the reality in extreme sensory detail. See your name next to the score on the scoreboard. Hear your friends congratulating you. Feel the texture of the grip.
  • Step 4: Repeat this sequence multiple times a day.

The Subconscious Shift

Over a short period, your subconscious accepts these vivid mental images as actual history. It alters your daily behavior without conscious effort. You will naturally choose dry-fire practice over watching television, check your gear meticulously, and seek out training opportunities because “that is simply what a 570 shooter does.”

*Note: You can back your primary card with subordinate statements to crush mental roadblocks (e.g., “I find it easy to schedule training time”).*

2. Tactical Visualization (Muscle Priming)

While strategic visualization rewrites your long-term identity, tactical visualization optimizes the execution of an individual shot.

The Science of Neural Priming

When an athlete visualizes an athletic movement flawlessly, electronic monitoring (mylographs) captures minute electrical fields moving down the neural pathways. Your brain activates the exact muscles required for the physical act during the mental rehearsal.

Implementation on the Firing Line

  1. The Perfect Model: You must hold a clear, technically perfect mental blueprint of what an ideal shot looks like and feels like.
  2. The Pre-Shot Routine: Immediately before raising your firearm, close your eyes and mentally execute the perfect shot from start to finish.
  3. The Mirror Execution: Open your eyes, hold onto that exact mental blueprint, raise the weapon, and let your body replicate what your mind just mapped out.

By entirely occupying your working memory with the sensory details of a flawless execution, your brain has zero cognitive bandwidth left to process doubt, distraction, or match-induced anxiety.
