Not sure what to make of this thing where people see something like "the AI created a GCC clone" and immediately go "software is done for" and then never investigate that or think about it again or look back and think "huh nothing actually changed and that clone just disappeared, I wonder what that means" but instead read "the AI created a Photoshop clone" and immediately go "software is done for"

bogwise@mastodon.gamedev.place 2 weeks ago @krig I think in this case there’s not much incentive to use a gcc copy - a staggeringly small population knows about gcc, even among devs, and it’s free to use so what’s the point.
but a lot of people use adobe products, and their pricing model is famously predatory. I expect the clones to stick around long enough for lawyers to get involved. maybe CS moves to a cloud model (good thing we have all those data centers <_<)
edit: use gcc -> use a gcc copy
aanee@mastodon.online 2 weeks ago @krig I'm just glad I don't have these "people" in my timeline. They seem ignorant.
kramo@chaos.social 2 weeks ago @krig This may be a bit too cynical to say, but as far as I can tell, the sentiment is largely downstream of executives wanting to find a reason to fire workers. Maybe the individual idea gets laundered through some blogger, but it’s a product of a culture of higher-ups and investors disinterested in what they are making.
markgl@mstdn.plus 2 weeks ago @krig Good points. Note that the 'GCC clone' was a C compiler only with a broken linker and other pieces missing that had to *call out to GCC* to actually perform the toted task of building the Linux kernel.

Also, quoting *from Anthropic's blog post*:
> I tried (hard!) to fix several of the above limitations but wasn’t fully successful. New features and bugfixes frequently broke existing functionality.

gbargoud@masto.nyc 2 weeks ago It is nice that in my little online bubble the response to "the AI created a Photoshop clone" has overwhelmingly been "I really want to watch Adobe and the AI companies duke it out in court"
