I installed OpenBSD on a 25 years old 32bit netbook I have, and it works well enough for me to mess around and learn things (and host a little toy website on it). Also did some C programming on it. No major issues.

It does sound like OpenBSD and derivatives will be better for old hardware… i figure what I learn with that will still be good for other BSDs
