I'm a self-hoster myself, but I can see how people find new friends, and date, and build relations, and gaming guilds, and get married etc. off of Discord, and other social platforms. No amount of self-hosting IRC would suddenly spawn a potential girlfriend on your server. Hence, the issue is not technical, the real issue is that people are extremely lonely, and what they are looking for is not features, but novelty, and the potential for building new relationships, and experiencing events and drama, and such. Even if you convince all your family and current friends to move to your XMPP instance, you would not be able to replicate the discoverability and vibrancy of those "public squares".

@rozenglass @KinkyKobolds This is why end-user curated algorithms are the best potential future of the internet.
You find people EXACTLY like you and build an echo chamber.
This is a wonderful thing except for the fact that the algorithm-creators have their own agendas which are antithetical to the goals of their end-users.
This is why YouTube and X can both be simultaneously based and dogshit.

Points at #IRC
Again, we had "digital public squares" before #AntisocialMedia!
- And #discord is anything but because they actively enshittify and act as an information blackhole worse than any shutdown Fediverse instance which you could at least #archive…
