In 2015, he was convicted on charges of drug trafficking, computer hacking, money laundering, and trafficking false identity documents. Prosecutors also alleged but did not prove he tried to commission murders. Ulbricht went to prison, but he was pardoned by Donald Trump just after he was sworn in, in January 2025. On September 10, 2026, Ulbricht appeared on stage and spoke at the Republican National Midterm Convention. He thanked Trump for the pardon. Is it not unusual for Trump and the Republicans to promote, feature and highlight and serious criminals? The convention was held in Texas, where the Republican candidate for Senate avoided a criminal conviction in part by paying off the investors he had misled.
