It also turns out I did not ruin my chances of a terrific public service job! There was an internal candidate already! My chances were limited (and reduced to zero since I didn't want to replace anyone who wanted to be there. Nor was I even given the opportunity to. Truly zero).
Still back to square one, but with a less pervasive crushing sense of failure.
