The last of him

You already know who he is and how he operates. You know his silence isn't a weapon or a game, but the byproduct of a life lived at maximum capacity. You’ve sat with the awkwardness of the distance, you’ve wrestled with feeling “silly” for caring so much, and yet, underlying all of it, you still carry this deep, genuine affection for him.

If you stay behind, you'll be left sitting in your room at 10:30 p.m. with the what-ifs. You'll spend the winter wondering if you let fear, or the fear of looking like you cared “too much”, rob you of one last afternoon on the water.

Going doesn't mean you have to demand answers, fix the silence, or force a storybook ending. It just means showing up as yourself; grounded, open, and willing to take the experience for what it is. It's a chance to step into his world one more time, watch him do what he loves, feel the cold river, and write the final line of this season on your own terms.

If it’s quiet, let it be quiet. If it’s warm and funny, hold onto that. But give yourself the gift of a proper closing chapter instead of a question mark.

Go fishing. Be in the magic of it, soak in the wildness, and let yourself say goodbye to this chapter while standing right in the middle of it.
