Acousmatic and its environment
Do acousmatic musical pieces have any real connection to the society ? Local or otherwise ?
It is more natural to talk about the acousmatic creations in general, which means including all mode of diffusions and installations. And it is more ideal to reflect on international musical scene. However, I may exclusively limit this to multichannel diffusion of acousmatic music in local environment. (In this case, my own local environment at the CRANE lab in France.)
First, the type of pieces. Usually, I only talk about my own compositions. Here, I do not do that, and I have no interest in mentioning other people’s music specifically. In the case of this location (le CRANE lab), usually there are various acousmatic pieces every year. I have never thought that any of these are completely out of societal context. Most of these composers have nothing to do with any of what is current in the local environment of us. Then, this is just my opinion, meaning, I become an audience and I think that way by listening to them. I may be able to say one thing, however. When I sit in the seat of the audience, I am willing to listen.
The other is, in the case of acousmatic/electronic music, which system, which speakers, and what softwares ? Is the system new or traditional ? Is that French ? Is that foreign ? Discussions on these issues should be kept alive, and by doing so, we can think or see what is still viable in the tradition (whatever that is) or anything new is necessary or unnecessary. Similar to the matter of the pieces, I do not think that what usually happens here is not out of societal context. Yet, still I cab be slightly concerned about one issue. In the area of electronic music, France has created is strong tradition in 20th century. And what France can do, or is willing to do can be brought to the centre by French composers.
So what is then, « societal context » ? What exactly does that mean ? This can include all things, which are literally happening in the society, visible and tangible. But also, most of societal undercurrent that is not easily visible and reachable may have some power on culture, or acousmatic music. We sense this. I think that most people do, but we do not talk about it.
